Hey,
it happened to my quite often that I'm attacked by a bigger group of fatboys. As soon as they reach a "critical mass", it is quite hard to defend against them, as they seem to have a lot of armor ... what's the best way to defend against them?

Well I downloaded the map pack here, which is a good start IMHO: https://torrentbox.com/download/1582141/springrts-map-pack.torrent For someone who's playing this for a longer time it may sound ridiculous, but it is not *that* easy to find maps fitting what you really want, springfiles isn't a help ...

I also do have a NVidia Quadro 2000m. Looks like I have the same problem with MT. /advmapshading makes the map look right (before it was black). Where can I set "LoadingMT = 0" and what does it do? I mean if then MT switched off MT I can just go with the normal exe, which is working fine ...

Under which circumstances should I decide for APATH or not-APATH versions? MT (APATH) is much faster. The other one is simply 94.1 + bugfixes. I recommend you get both versions. If you play single player setup the lobby to start spring-mt to get the performance boost. If you play online the correct...

spring uses OpenGL, and best OpenGL support/performance for ATI under linux is usually achieved with the fglrx drivers (ATI proprietary one), try to get it working with that (use google). if that wont work, or if pages you find tell you it will not work for your card and X-server or something, try ...
