I got Sots2 myself, and let me tell you the game is a lot better now. It runs and plays a lot better. Still im waiting one more month before i dive into it more seriously.

They are improving and developing the game as we speak, its not a finished product.

If you played the first, you should have expected this bugged release, it took months to reach a fully finished state.

So i suggest you wait a month and youll see Sots2 as the best 4x game made to this day.

if you hapened to get a refund for it , the patches are out there for you to try.

last 10 times I checked the transparency shaders still had z-sorting issues and the research screen is a big mess :-P

doesn't look like the turn based combat that we all love. the planetary screen looks a lot like ascendancy too...

Sword of the stars annoyed me because the 3 dimensional starmap and the controls weren't comfortable, especially when I had to deal with FTL links collapsing and needing refreshing and having the ships that do that being stuck at the other end and needing supplies, so much stuff to nanny

well, as far as I know it´s the only 4x game coming out 2012. So I will keep an eye on it.

But its true, the habit of making the combat non turn based in the newer 4X games is annoying.

Also, only 3 different species is disappointing. Being able to build your own is one of the features that make MoO a really good game.
What I like, is that they want to make the game easy to mod, so even if it is not perfect at the start, it may get improved by fans.

How well does it play? I see nothing abotu factions and scope on there, for all I know there are fleets of thousands with only 3 ship types

the game has potencial, but i do find it lacking in every way, take it like a good base game for people to make theyr mods on.

The game has Template factions, with some generalistic tecnologies. But what i enjoy most is you can move your fleets up and down, the solar systems are represented in a nice way

But the game lacks a lot of things. It may be fun if played with friends. I dont encourage it for your casual 4x game.

I've tried Star Ruler when it came out, wasn't exactly thrilling or completely bad either.

The only 4X games that I played for longer than a week or two in the last 15 years were Pax Imperia 2 and of course both Orions.
