After reading up on it, I wonder if it might be a bit too complicated. I'm not really much of a stranger to this sort of thing and I'm pretty confused about it.

on old planetwars it was easy to see who controlled what part of the galaxy map, with the red & blue lines it was easy to see how good your team (arm/core) was doing. So it kind of felt like a larger battle etc. Do you plan to bring that back? Atm I can not see what is going on the galaxy map.
Well, the little adjascent clan icons show you who has dominant control of the planet... but there is no rhyme or reason to whether or not it will show the minority controller, and there's at least one case where it's showing the secondary owner above the primary one while the primary one is a little shrunken version (no idea what that is) on Rigil Kentaurus.
So there's that. Also, what's it mean when the dominant influence on the planet is "??".
And I still don't know what the various bits of crud splattered onto the planet mean. Iirc, Licho said "buildings" but there's no legend as to greater details.
Map is MUCH cleaner once you join a clan. Its then colored according to clan treaty status - your clan is teal, ceasefire blue, ally green, neutral yellow, war red.
If you click planet you see what buildings there are along with icon. +300 IP defense means that you need more than 300IP more than current planet owner to capture it. (Capturing destroyes the defense too). They probably upgraded planet defense to make it hold longer.
"??" influence is just sum of unclanned people. Those cannot own planet but are tracked and when they join a clan this influence becaomes clan influence.
