basically for the second part of the qualification im completing i need to write a computer program for a specific end user. im considering a lobby of some kind primarily aimed at ubuntu users or linux in general since it should get me good marks for complexity and user friendlyness aswell as help me develop useful skills.
what i would like to know:
- is there a good part of the wiki to start trawling through? id search it myself but the wiki can be an unfruitful place if you dont know where to look/search for.
-are there any particulary difficult problems i should look out for?
-will anyone be willing to be the end user? i need to provide evidence that this product is actually used and wanted by someone and they will need to liase with me by email and answer questions for the research part of the coursework.
-do any licences apply to making a lobby? or only specific parts? just in case some stupid exam rule prevents me from releasing source code to prevent plagarism etc etc (will GPL it or somesuch when the work is completed regardless thought )
ty for the help (or comments on we dont need another lobby etc etc )

Re: looking for help starting a project
I've been looking for a reason to get back into linux again and I like email correspondence. And currently I have sooo much free time. I'd be happy to be your end user.

Look at the lobby protocol documentation

I think there will be user.... if you manage to make something better than spring lobby.
Personally, I only boot windows when I play spring cause TAS is so much better.

html protocol :
http://springrts.com/dl/tasclient/Proto ... iption.xml
that's all you need
there can't be any license for something you will make from scratch and there is nothing complicate in making a lobby, it just takes a lot of time

Re: looking for help starting a project
pick a language, pick a gui framework
if your language happens to be python there's a public domain protocol helper which takes a bit of the rawness out of talking to the server
some frameworks like GTK have builders like Glade to make layout easier
