[misc] Spring applied for GSoC 2009
Posted: 12 Mar 2009, 22:34
by Auswaschbar
Spring applied for participation in the Google summer of code 2009 as a mentoring organisation. We hope to get some projects for improving spring, and to attract new developers, because you can never have enought of them
If you know some C++ and want to see spring imrpoving, please participate. Also ask your friends, colleagues, siblings, grandparents ... if they want to do.
A list of some project examples can be found at
http://spring.clan-sy.com/wiki/SpringEngineTODO. You can also make your own proprosal.

Huzzah!
Sadly, my coding skill is equivalent to that of a dying rabid dog, so I can't really contribute much

mesh deformation.
skeletal animation.
rope physics.
I wouldn't care about anything else if those were implemented
though SM3+1 would be nice too

I noticed we didn't get accepted. Did they give any reason for turning us down?

Reasons some google-guy gave us in IRC:
- there was some pessimistic comment in the gsoc-discussion forum thread, which was linked from our todo-page
- we did not have a dedicated GSoC-site in our wiki, we used our regular todo-site
And yes, we know this is weird.

I can't find pessimistic comments in the gsoc thread, but I do agree with the last. If you look at other projects, they are really prepared for GSOC, have mentors and projects ready also.
Anyway, hopefully more luck next year..

I think they mean this:
"i don't quite believe google would want a rather niche game... and we're not exactly an organization."
And yeah, I should have put a google banner to the todo list and renamed it to "gsoc idea list" or something like that.....

rather niche O_o
they accepted wesnoth last year. I think thats way more niche than a rts engine

we talked a bit about this in #sy, the conclusion was "move along, nothing to see here". next year we'll have to try harder, use a wiki, censor the soc forum threads, provide a mentor for each project proposal upfront, etc. as of this year, case closed.

Ok. IMO, that's madness. But Spring just needs to get more
organized, then they might accept us.

Isn't wesnoth crap? Atleast compared to Spring.
We should demand justice, or at the very least extract revenge.

I can understand not liking the style of Wesnoth's gameplay, but calling it crap when it does several things better than Spring does currently stinks of bias.
* MacOS binaries + other more exotic OS binaries available
* Single-player campaigns
* Installer comes bundled with everything you need to play immediately because the content doesn't face the same legal ramifications of most Spring mods.
