Ubuntu install guide up to date?

Post by PauloMorfeo »

Hi all.

Is the Ubuntu Linux install guide:
http://springrts.com/wiki/Ubuntu_install
Up to date?

I followed those instructions and, upon login, it pops me up a message warning me that the version I'm using is outdated (85 instead of 9x) and that online play will be disabled...

No idea, but there were some issues with Ubuntu's repos.
You may want to try using a different lobby: http://weblobby.springrts.com/. It's a web lobby that requires Java, but it can install (will automatically download) statically compiled Spring for multiple platforms, including Linux.

yes, the instructions should work. 85 is the spring version that is in the proper ubuntu repo, so it means something went wrong with your update process. maybe, clean-out all spring related entries from your sources file, and then re-add the spring repo with the linked instructions. i also had some problems getting 94.1 at first.

Somehow Ubuntu updated yesterday(?) and it carried an update to Spring and everything is now working fine. Thanks anyway.

You should use web lobby anyway. It is far better.

The lobby was complaining about the version of the RTS engine, not about the version of the lobby itself (if I remember correctly). As such, changing to a different lobby wouldn't really make any difference. Though I will still give the web Java lobby a try to check it out.

Yeah. Silentwings pretty much summed it up like I should have. Weblobby is a lot more advanced and has a lot more capabilities. I suppose that I had it in my head that you would see that once you tried it (although there was no guarantee of that).

there is no linux build thing of spring 91 (which half the games online use) so even with weblobby you can not download it.
(correct me if wrong, but some time ago there was none)
