scifi, not only does it seem like you are high jacking, but you are ripping off battle tech kind of blatantly.
well talk is one thing, the best way to announce a mod is post a beta for people to play and give feed back. I think there is probably screen shots for about half (if not 3/4) the projects people said they were working on but were never released, but they can sometimes encourage people to help you.
I have a plausible game explanation that could work for you. I came up with all of this just now, upon reading your introduction with its typical "humans vs aliens" BS :)
Consider that the Terrans might be the "humans who want to stay human". They rely on gravity (natural or artificial) to go about their daily lives. Humans don't fare very well in long-term exposure to zero-gravity conditions; we have an affinity for solid ground and radiation shielding.
The enemy are the "humans who are adapting/genetically engineering/evolving into a separate space-faring species". They're a bunch of zero-gravity freaks, and the Terrans are disgusted by them. Likewise, the space-people think the Terrans are a bunch of hairy monkeys, and are wasting all the resources.
So the Terrans might be slower (their ships are heavier) and more numerous, while the space-people are more nimble but have a small population (they're the rebels). This sets you up for two plausible teams with distinctly different combat styles: brute force vs highly optimized.
Also, genetic engineering made the space people way smarter... so they get lots of cool lasers, shields, gravity control (fulfilling the need for "cool alien tech"), while the Terrans are still using good-old-fashioned projectile weapons (missiles, cannons, guns). So, overall the Terrans are slower and conventionally armed, good for all-out assaults and holding territory, while the space-people are better suited for raiding and guerrilla warfare. The Terrans might have T3 ground units, but the space people have T3 flying fortresses.
Anyway, that was longer than I meant it to be. One thought just followed an other...

This could become a classic... If you look up closely, there are one man bands, two man bands- and those who play the solo-guitar.
Smoth is working solo, and thats because he learned it for a living. (Although he heavy cooperates with others) ZeroK Guys are one big band, because they want a Spring of the Futures. Other teams, i guess are bound together by beeing friends in real live, classmates or stuff. Other guys again, carried there load so far, and ate the ideas and delivered work of other people, that those people became co-devs by accident.
