map request: Autumn Wood Redux

Post by 1v0ry_k1ng »

So, agorms legendary tree map:
http://springfiles.com/spring/spring-maps/autumnwood

Image

It had its fair share of problems (too many small features for massive lag, huge hitboxes on the trees, not a good layout for *A gameplay). It was also incredibly atmospheric and made very sensual screenshots.

Given how far spring has come since then, and particularly the quality of map textures, it is surely time for a remake!

Ironicly thats a shot from the original version that was never made availible due to even more issues...

Much as I agree that it would be good to have a new version, have the things that made it not easy to play been fixed? I mean, the trees will surly still have huge hitboxes, etc...

I'd be happy to work with someone to make a new version of such a map, it would probably be a good idea for someone who plays a lot of BA to come up with some sort of layout (I havn't actully played a game of spring (except to dick around) for about 4 years... (to busy deving things... :? )

Looks like a job for PicassoCT!
For the trees, the feature hitboxes can now be thin cylinders.
The linked map does not have any features spawned when I just tried it.

Hitvolumes for targeting are still spherical.

And if you zoom out, you only see leaves, a green ocean.

Or you hide them, and then you just have the trees and roots (who are the most intersting thing on this idea anyway - if you dont allow kbots to fight on bridges)

did not try but probally some stupid like no startpositions etc?
but the texture/heightmap are nothing special anyway, just the features would be worth to reuse.

To be honest, features could be a lot better to (now I can modle properly). It was good for the time but thats all.

If I was to re make it I think it would be best if somone else came up with a layout, I can do the heightmap, maybe work with someone else on the map texture (things have moved on a lot since I last did a map) and then I slam in a load of cool features, giving us a good map as a showcase of what can be done.

Or anyone can use these features in a map of there own if they want, just dont call it "Autumn Wood Redux" if thats the case :-)

Here is my suggestion for the layout, based on original work and on the famous autumn wood screenshot:

They were just the original trees on V0.1 of Autumn Wood, but they were 3do, but by teh time I got to V1 s3o was out and I replaced them with way better trees...

Can features have normal maps nowadays? That would help...
