you convert those bitmapfiles via the mapconverter.

Then you pack them into a sdz which is just a sd7 .

http://www.7-zip.de/

I know its sometimes is quite offensive, how old the told-you-soos drop loads of links, but those tutorials are good, and there is a lot of work that went into them. Post if you get stuck or any problems.

if you use springmapeditor, you do not need to use mapconv. In springmapeditor there is a menu named "File -> export spring sm2 map" (or similiar)
very hard rotate map
readme has all hotkeys, camera is strange at first but then works good. iirc space and L to toggle lock to height and view mode.

No.

You pack them into a .sdz which is just a .zip
or into a .sd7 which is just a .7z

ah yes.
That is explained here:
http://springrts.com/wiki/Maps:SMD
What I suggest is to unpack a map where you like the settings such as lightning, water color, metal extractor radius etc and use the .smd file from that.
Then just adjust the following things:
mapname
author
description
start positions
(if you got that working, you can start changing other parameters too)

The new way to make maps without .smd file is this:
http://springrts.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=56&t=26028
But I do not know much about it.
