I've got a IBM Thinkpad R40 ($10 from ebay!) with a mobility radeon 7500, and the drivers from IBM.
Spring won't start on it, it crashes right after loading. I've turned all the setting down as far as they go.

Anyway, I aso have a Dell Inspiron 600m with a mobility radeon 9000, which plays spring perfectly. I've read that the 7500 is almost identical, but had less RAM...

Mod: BA 7.19

Tried in windows XP, as well as windows 7(took forever to figure out how to install drivers... there are no WDDM drivers for the GPU.)

7500 is opengl 1.3, is the 1.4 check still in the engine?

what does your infolog say?

i translated the infolog, and it indeed fails in Shader.cpp. This is supported by this info from your infolog:
Code:
[      0] GLSL: (null)

i though it should be possible to run spring without shader support. maybe it also depends on the map/mod...
anyway, it would be nice if we could check for some extension/function, and give a nice error message, instead of crashing this way.

I don't know how much depends on the mod. I do know that CA always crashes in a similar way when I start a building on my desktop computer running a Radeon HD 4850, though BA doesn't.

Is there a way to get spring running on that 7500?

Edit: I installed the 6.11 Catalyst drivers via the DH mobility modder. It still fails in the same way. I also tried it with a different map, small divide.

I have this same problem, except that I have a ThinkPad T42 (but same video card). How might I go about running Spring without shader support? (Even though Lua Shaders are already disabled in springsettings.)

Attached is my infolog.

try to lower graphics settings / disable decals in springsettings, then you maybe have some luck to get it running...

some hints that maybe help: http://springrts.com/wiki/FAQ:trouble#I ... angs_etc...

i think you should try to get a newer driver, maybe omegadrivers work:

I've sold the T40 months ago, but I'm pretty sure I tried those as well.

Thanks. :-) What's funny is that I already did try Linux to run Spring, a couple months ago. I haven't tried the Omega drivers, and I'm tempted to even though CompWiz says he already tried that.

...Or just play Total Annihilation, which runs flawlessly on such hardware. Lol.

Because obviously you all desperately need to know: the T42 with the radeon 7500 works fine with Spring 0.83

Woo! Just in time for the $30 T43 I found on ebay! This one has a Radeon x300 though. Also a brand new battery, believe it or not.

I also tried spring on a thinkpad x61 tablet, but the GMA965 means it's not much good for maps bigger than 8x8. At least not at the native resolution of 1400x1050

Ebay is horrible. Also can be profitable.
