You need buckets in order for dwarfs to bring injured dwarfs food/water.
To take the thread off topic... how the hell did you manage to get a mason and a fisherman injured? Masons basically don't to anything dangerous ever, and fishermen's biggest risk is cave river floods, which either kill or don't kill, no injuries...
Yeah, I'm starting over again. Apparently, nobody knows how to eat or drink. How come only the Miners and Masons died this time, I ask you! Oh, and three people got the fey, but needed metal... I've never found actual ore in this bleeding game.

You could always use the show all utility; you should easily find ores if you're digging alot. dont always concentrate on length, concentrate on width too and plan out natural supports. Your bound to hit ore viens.
I always do digs that span the whole width of the map once i get past the chasm. When I find something valuable (iron, platinum, coal), I dig a chamber with supports.
