Thanks for all your donations!

After donating using paypal, you will get an email with a link to assign your donation to your spring name (for some gifts in Zero-K game :-)

Current server is 24 GB RAM, 2x4x i7 920, 2TB disk and its purchased till November 2012. Traffic is virtually unlimited at 100mbit speed.

If you need server for spring-related project, let me know!

Costs of 2009 operations were roughly 350€.
Costs for 2010 were 677€ (after VAT refund)
Costs for 2011 were 650€ (after VAT refund)
Costs for 2012 were 812€ (incl. win license, after VAT refund)
Costs for 2013 were 812€ (incl. win license, after VAT refund)
Sum 3316€

2009 was cheaper because it was 9 months instead of 12 and because it was less powerful server.
For 2010 there is much better server but I had to pay commisioning fee (which costs 2 extra months).
For 2012 there is extra cost of windows license.

I was under the impression that virtual machine sitting at 60/30%+ cpu/ram was the biggest hit :P

sad to hear it's so expensive. maybe we could move the forums to a different host?

VM uses 1/2 of one core due to VM bug, its not really used, its like reserved for VM ..
VM hosts downloader server, planetwars, modelbase, mission editor and similar projects on .NET platform.

Moving to better CPU with VT-X instructions will fix this CPU bug.

VM also uses 700MB of RAM but when server dies, it dies because of forums spawning too many PHP processes and running out of RAM.

I could renew same hardware it has now for about $500 for next year.

So yeah moving some things out of the server would help. But its probably a lot of work to do it properly, since various things are wired together.

lobby/wiki/forums weren't hard to move at all, and it's possible we could move to a server with much lower ram (i.e. vps) if we replaced the lobby server.

any idea how flexible sourceforge's phpbb hosting is?
it's currently integrated with both our wiki and website...

For example modelbase uses spring forum mysql..

I dont think such things would be possible with sourceforge hosting..

Oh btw. I will renew one of these server offers http://kimsufi.co.uk/ (it's actually their equivalent for Czech republic but prices are similar)

modelbase...directly posts to sql? there's no reason it can't be separated.

How did you figure out it's the forum?

Anyway, apparently it was set to 100M max per process (no clue if someone increased it or if it was like this always).

I reduced it to 32M again, and reduced max processes to 15 (from 20), so it can not cause trouble anymore.

Because there is no other significant website hosted there (in linux part) so it has to be something from spring that is frequently accessed.

Yeah I cannot be sure it's forums but what else?

I just know server sometimes gets into state where restarting apache releases 1+GB of RAM and fixes all lag.

I think that phpbb runs forums a lot bigger than spring one , so maybe good idea just asking a big forum's admin about cpu & ram usage

Me or AF could host the site/forums. At my request DH just moved me to a shiny 64bit server (moved our mysql host as well), and is fast as hell. Plus neither I nor AF have any limitations on anything, soo... the offer is out there.

Also, 700 a year on server costs is crazy talk! O_O!!!

Dreamhost would not be able to handle the spring site.

You're wrong. The site and the forums wouldn't be a problem. You might wanna take a look at all that my dh server is doing atm (or just ask lurker), it's a pretty large load.

Edit: Here is what I suggest. We should put what we can on sourceforge (massive server farms ftw?), and all the other stuff, we could spread it around to other hosts (such as mine and AF's) and that way, our costs would go down to practically nothing (I don't need any help paying for mine, and I'm pretty sure AF doesn't either, and neither of ours is going anywhere anytime soon).

That's why I say, stick the site/forums on mine or AF's host, and everything else put on sourceforge and jsut meter it across the 3. However, if we could put the site and the forums on sourceforge, then that would be the massively better option.
